Going back in time here. Yes .. well now it's the new year and Thanksgiving was a long time ago but well the whole little blog project mostly got away from us last year. We do have a few more pictures worth sharing and we'll try to put them all up soon. We were lucky to travel to Rochester three times in 2011 which happily for me meant lots of quality time spent with my grandma. She is an amazing woman. Truly. I love any chance to be with her. I love the chance to sit with her on her living room couch and listen to stories of when she grew up. She grew up in Scranton, PA and was one of 6 sisters. Her father was a coal miner who died of black lung at a fairly young age. Her family was very poor. They never had a camera so there are no pictures of my grandma until her twenties. Probably the only picture of my great grandparents that exists was their wedding portrait made in a studio. What a different time. My grandma hitchhiked to school because her family had no car. She got a job as soon as she was old enough. All of her sisters did too. They all helped support the family. I know my grandma learned early in life to have a good work ethic and make the most of whatever she had. She is graceful and a real charmer. She is one of my most favorite people in the whole world. Thanksgiving is always a favorite holiday and was especially great this year because we also celebrated my Grandma's 90th birthday. My aunt Janet and uncle Jimmy hosted a wonderful surprise party at their house. But these are pictures from Thanksgiving Day. I woke up and drove over to Grandma's early to help and at 9 am she was peeling the last of the potatoes. The turkey was already in the oven, stuffing already made. Not much left to help with.
So instead, she helped me peel apples for an apple pie I planned to make.
