Little Saint Simon's

In March, we celebrated Erv Houston's birthday with a family vacation at Little Saint Simon's Island. LSSI is just about as lovely as it gets. After a boat ride, you arrive at the most pristine island (kept that way in part due to a very limited number of guests - only 30-35 are allowed on the entire island at any time and it is virtually undeveloped). The landscape is wild and beautiful, typical of coastal Georgia, with Live Oaks and Spanish Moss everywhere, and the forest floors are covered in various palms. Situated where the Altamaha River opens into the Atlantic Ocean, the island is teeming in wildlife and biodiversity. There are naturalists on the island that accompany you on expeditions bird watching, kayaking or hiking and point out songbirds, snakes, and alligators. We really enjoyed bird watching and counted off 50 birds that we identified, with help! We saw a baby great horned owl and young eagles in their nests, through the lens of a telescope. The island has bikes, so you can tool around or there are boats to take out. The food was awesome, the scenery was fantastic and the company superb.
At the oyster roast! Erv seems content with a glass of wine in one hand and a roasted oyster in the other.
Since spring came early in Georgia, azaleas were in bloom everywhere! This is just outside the house where we stayed.

We are nuts about this guy!

On our last day, we went strawberry picking outside of Savannah and loaded up on fresh strawberries for our flight home! We had a great family trip and we hope it becomes an annual tradition!
